Book Review “Single by Choice or Chance” By Jill O’Donnell & Jackie Porter

It is difficult to summarize this book because it has so many great thought-provoking chapters.  It is an easy read that will inspire you to really think about what the next chapters of your life, especially retirement will look like for you and how to achieve your dreams and goals.

I want to start off by saying how I enjoyed reading this book.  It is jammed packed with loads of information relevant to anyone, but I love how it focuses on women.  Whether we are single by choice or chance/circumstance, we all need to consider many topics that will impact us as we move forward with life.

The book starts by asking some great questions when thinking about retirement.  Where will I want to live? What do I want to do?  How will I pay for this?  I find it interesting that these are questions I am already asking myself about the next 2-5 years of my life as I become an empty nester.  And, they become even more important when I want to retire.

Designing my future and having a plan to support it is paramount.  The book suggests many of us take more time to plan a holiday gathering than we do our retirement.  This is a scary thought.

There are so many things to consider as the number of our age increases year after year (even though we may not feel our age).  Will we continue to support our adult children?  Do we have aging parents how will need more of our time, energy and possible financial support?  Who will look after us when the time comes?  How will our care be paid for?  How will make the decisions?

This book provides specific topics that should be considered.  One of the first (and most important) decisions is; who will help us create this plan?  A Certified Financial Planner would be imperative, followed by an accountant and a lawyer.  These three professionals can guide you through the details and laws and how they do and will apply to your specific situation.  Creating a team of professionals whom you trust and will assist you in developing the plan that best suits your future plans is essential.  Naturally, like any best laid plan, it is always subject to change – by choice or chance.

It is difficult to summarize this book because it has so many great thought provoking chapters.  It is an easy read that will inspire you to really think about what the next chapters, especially retirement will look like for you and how to achieve your dreams and goals.
